The purging compound | screw cleaning agent | screw cleaner is a type of plastic granule added with chemical substances in the resin base material, possessing special properties. It dynamically cleans the screw and barrel through physical action. After entering the screw for melting, it generates high viscosity. By soaking the carbon deposits and residues, they loosen and peel off. After 5-10 minutes of reaction time, it exerts a strong cleaning effect on the screw and barrel. The unique formula ensures low residue of the product. It does not contain any corrosive chemicals, does not damage equipment, and does not pollute raw materials. Using this screw cleaning agent can significantly reduce waste of resources due to frequent color and material changes, and efficiently remove carbides inside the barrel and on the screw surface.

Case: Purging for color changeover( PP material from Black to Yellow) of 1300T injection molding machine (excluding hot runners). This case comes from one of our domestic electronic product injection molding manufacturing clients.
Cost Items | Cleaning with Raw Materials | Cleaning with Purge Compound(DM-PC003U) |
Average Cleaning Material Usage | 46.5KGs | 5KGs |
Material Cost | $63.71(PP raw material price: $1.37/kg) | $32.88(Purge Compound price of DM-PC003U: $6.58/kg) |
Average Cleaning Time | 50minutes | 10minutes |
Water and Electricity Cost for Color Changeover ($19.77/hour) | $16.47/time | $3.36/time |
Labor Cost for Color Changeover( (average is about $5.89/hour, 2 people needed for color changeover cleaning) | $9.82/time | $1.96/time |
Downtime Cost Per Hour | $41.10/hour | $41.10/hour |
Total Downtime Loss | $34.25 | $6.85 |
Total Cleaning Cost | $124.23 | $45.04 |
Mechanical Wear | Cost unable to be evaluated specifically | Reduced machine wear time by 40 minutes, cost unable to be evaluated specifically. |
Safety Hazards | Every time for color changeover cleaning, the residual material in the hot runner needs to be ejected, and people need to push open the protective door of the injection molding machine to clean the residue sprayed on the mold, which will create safety hazards, cost: unable to evaluate specifically. | If you use our screw cleaning agent DM-6005H to clean the hot runner, you need not open the protective door of the injection molding machine to clean the residue inside. Just eject the screw cleaning material directly—no safety hazards. |
From the above cost comparison results, we can see that using our screw cleaner for color change cleaning can save about $79.19 (124.23-45.04), which you may think is very small. However, our customer has 6 such injection molding machines, and each machine needs color changeover cleaning about 3 times a week on average.
Therefore, the cost savings for each injection molding machine per year is $79.19.00*3 times*52 weeks = $12353.64
For 6 machines, the total cost savings for one year is $12353.64*6 = $74121.84

No, injection molding and extrusion do not require different purging compounds. DOME offers a universal cleaning agent suitable for both injection molding machines and extruders. Grade selection is typically based on application rather than process. Chemical purging compounds are commonly used for extrusion, while mechanical purging compounds are preferred for screw and barrel cleaning. On the other hand, mechanical purging compounds are usually the top choice for injection molding, whereas chemical purging compounds are effective for cleaning hot runners. Consult with a DOME® Purging Expert to identify the best grade for your specific needs.

It’s understandable that regrind or virgin PP resin falls short in effectively purging your machines. These materials lack the purging capabilities of dedicated purging compounds. When using regrind or virgin resins for purging, they merely cover existing resins, color residues, or carbonized materials in the barrel. Over time, these layers become additional sources of contamination, complicating the purging process. We advocate for the use of purging compounds across all resin types, regardless of their complexity, to ensure thorough machine cleaning and prevent contamination buildup.
Yes, DOME® purging compounds are formulated for versatility and perform across a wide variety of resins, eliminating the need for multiple purging compounds. The models DM-PC001U and DM-PC003U are designed for universal use.
High-quality purging compounds like DOME® Purging Compounds are essential if you prioritize process efficiency, profitability, and sustainability. While DIY purging methods, regrind, virgin resin, and budget alternatives may seem cheaper initially, they often lead to higher costs over time. DOME® Purging Compounds are highly effective at minimizing downtime during changeovers and start-ups, preventing contamination, and reducing maintenance needs. They save significant amounts of production material, lower scrap rates, and cut down on energy and labor costs. Other solutions simply can’t match their value or performance.
Utilizing regrind for purging can lead to increased contamination, raising costs, and working against sustainability objectives. Despite initial perceptions, DOME® Purging Compounds proves more cost-effective than regrind when considering machine time, material expenses, labor costs, and scrap costs.
Moreover, purging with regrind results in machine buildup over time, necessitating more frequent full teardowns. If contamination reaches a critical point, purging alone may not suffice. Preventative purging with DOME® Purging Compounds can help avoid the need for teardowns and maintain operational efficiency.
Yes, it is common for scrap to increase initially when trialing a purging compound. This is due to the possibility of pulling out contaminants that were previously unrecognized within the layers of contamination in your machine.
Regular purging will lead to a significant reduction in scrap rates. It is essential to assess the cleanliness of your machine before testing a purging compound to avoid skewed performance comparisons between different products.
To accurately compare the performance and cost savings of various purging compounds, trial them on machines with similar levels of contamination.
High-cavitation molds, stack molds, and caps & closures show excellent results with DOME® Purging Compounds DM-PC001U. Depending on your application, resins, and processing temperatures, our Purging Experts may suggest an alternative grade of DOME® Purging compounds.
DOME® Purging Compounds are a safe and effective option for numerous packaging, medical, and pharmaceutical applications. Our Purging Experts assist medical manufacturers in minimizing scrap and downtime daily. It’s important to note that there are no commercial purging compounds approved by the FDA as the FDA does not regulate or provide approval for purging compounds. However, this does not imply that you cannot safely utilize purging compounds for cleaning your machinery.
Yes, DOME® Purging Compound is the ultimate solution for cleaning screws, nozzles, molds, hot runners, and dies of injection molding machines and extruders.
