What are Purging Compounds | Screw Cleaning Agents?

The purging compound | screw cleaning agent | screw cleaner is a type of plastic granule added with chemical substances in the resin base material, possessing special properties. It dynamically cleans the screw and barrel through physical action. After entering the screw for melting, it generates high viscosity. By soaking the carbon deposits and residues, they loosen and peel off. After 5-10 minutes of reaction time, it exerts a strong cleaning effect on the screw and barrel. The unique formula ensures low residue of the product. It does not contain any corrosive chemicals, does not damage equipment, and does not pollute raw materials. Using this screw cleaning agent can significantly reduce waste of resources due to frequent color and material changes, and efficiently remove carbides inside the barrel and on the screw surface.

Total Cleaning Cost$124.23$45.04
Mechanical WearCost unable to be evaluated specificallyReduced machine wear time by 40 minutes, cost unable to be evaluated specifically.
Safety HazardsEvery time for color changeover cleaning, the residual material in the hot runner needs to be ejected, and people need to push open the protective door of the injection molding machine to clean the residue sprayed on the mold, which will create safety hazards, cost: unable to evaluate specifically. If you use our screw cleaning agent DM-6005H to clean the hot runner, you need not open the protective door of the injection molding machine to clean the residue inside. Just eject the screw cleaning material directly—no safety hazards.

From the above cost comparison results, we can see that using our screw cleaner for color change cleaning can save about $79.19 (124.23-45.04), which you may think is very small. However, our customer has 6 such injection molding machines, and each machine needs color changeover cleaning about 3 times a week on average.

Therefore, the cost savings for each injection molding machine per year is $79.19.00*3 times*52 weeks = $12353.64

For 6 machines, the total cost savings for one year is $12353.64*6 = $74121.84

Usage Instructions for Purging Compound

Clean with a screw cleaning agent using the following steps. If the screw is not clean, continue cleaning with the following steps until the screw is clean without any impurities. Refer to the table for the amount to be used.

  1. Empty the material from the injection molding machine and clean the hopper.
  2. Choose the right screw cleaning agent according to the purpose, and weigh the recommended amount of cleaning agent into the hopper.
  3. Check the temperatures in each zone. If they are within the working range of the screw cleaning material, it is recommended to clean directly at that temperature. If the temperatures are outside the working range, adjust the actual temperatures of each zone to be within the working temperature range.
  4. Start the screw to discharge the screw cleaning material. Observe the discharged material visually. When all the ejected material has been replaced with the cleaning material, stop the machine for plasticization. Allow the cleaning material to stay in the screw for 5-8 minutes for penetration, then start a high injection speed and pressure to inject the cleaning material. Repeat this process 3-4 times, with each reaction time needing 5-8 minutes until all the cleaning material in the barrel is completely ejected.
  5. Continue running the screw until the appearance of the discharged material is completely clean, without any black spots or impurities. Focus on cleaning the nozzle thoroughly until it is completely clean.
  6. Introduce the material to be used for the upcoming production into the barrel, start the screw to replace the residual cleaning material in the barrel, and begin formal production. If the cleaning temperature differs from the production temperature, adjust it to the production temperature beforehand.

The twin-screw extruder follows similar cleaning steps to the injection molding machine.

Instructions for Shutdown Maintenance Using DOME® Screw Cleaning Agent

  1. Before the shutdown, when the raw materials for normal production are about to run out, suck the cleaning agent materials into the material cylinder or pour them directly into it, the quantity depending on the size of the screw.
  2. Move the shooting platform to the backward position, perform a normal shot, and when you see that the nozzle is dispensing cleaning agent material, and there is very little cleaning material left in the cylinder, you can stop the machine.
  3. Fill the cleaning agent into the screw without shooting: when starting production next time, once the temperature reaches the normal production level, eject the cleaning material filled in the screw, and the production will resume quickly.

It’s understandable that regrind or virgin PP resin falls short in effectively purging your machines. These materials lack the purging capabilities of dedicated purging compounds. When using regrind or virgin resins for purging, they merely cover existing resins, color residues, or carbonized materials in the barrel. Over time, these layers become additional sources of contamination, complicating the purging process. We advocate for the use of purging compounds across all resin types, regardless of their complexity, to ensure thorough machine cleaning and prevent contamination buildup.

Yes, DOME® purging compounds are formulated for versatility and perform across a wide variety of resins, eliminating the need for multiple purging compounds. The models DM-PC001U and DM-PC003U are designed for universal use.

High-quality purging compounds like DOME® Purging Compounds are essential if you prioritize process efficiency, profitability, and sustainability. While DIY purging methods, regrind, virgin resin, and budget alternatives may seem cheaper initially, they often lead to higher costs over time. DOME® Purging Compounds are highly effective at minimizing downtime during changeovers and start-ups, preventing contamination, and reducing maintenance needs. They save significant amounts of production material, lower scrap rates, and cut down on energy and labor costs. Other solutions simply can’t match their value or performance.
